PRO Grading will adhere to the general industry guidelines for
centering and corner wear, but with allowances for vintage and some early minor
league cards. A modern 90s card should have 55-45 centering to qualify for a 10,
however a 1952 Mantle with all the other characteristics of a 10, may qualify at
60-40. Accurate grading must be flexible enough to assure fairness and
suitability for the card in question.
We do not use qualifiers, which other companies use as a convenient way out
of these problems. Centering, marks, register and stains are essential
ingredients of grading, and qualifiers are confusing to everyone. What is a 9 OC?
Is 85-15 really only a 7. Oops 85-15 isn't allowed in a 7. Should it be a 5? Of
course not! The totality of the card must be considered and the grade assigned
should represent the value of the card.
Grading requires mature judgment. That is why all PRO graded cards are graded
by two experts, and a copy of the grading slip is returned with each card PRO
grades. Another copy is kept on file, if a purchaser in the future wants to
check on why the card was graded a 9.5 instead of a 10. A small charge may be
made for this service, but it could be very important to someone considering a
$10,000 bid on E-Bay.
